The tradition of afternoon tea started in England around 1840 when Anna, the 7th Duchess of Bedford would become hungry in the late afternoon because she didn’t eat dinner until eight o’clock in the evening. She would request a tray of tea, bread & butter and cake every afternoon to hold her over until her dinner hour. As this habit took hold, she began inviting friends, and this afternoon pause grew into a fashionable social event by the 1880’s. The upper-class and society women arrived in long gowns, hats and gloves to be served tea and finger foods in the drawing room between four and five o’clock.
